Aspects of time and time measurement in Classical Antiquity

Prof. Dr. Rita Gautschy

(DaSCH - Swiss National Data and Service Center for the Humanities)

In Ancient Egypt, two terms existed for time based on the polarity of duration and cycle. The exact meaning and its best possible translation are still being discussed – the first part of the lecture will explore the use and meaning of these terms in the so-called Pyramid Texts and Coffin Texts. The second part will be devoted to Egyptian time-measuring devices – star clocks, sundials and water clocks and their probable importance in daily life.
